Budidaya: Manfaat Terung Ungu

Terung merupakan jenis tumbuhan berbuah yang dimanfaatkan sebagai sayur-sayuran, buah terung biasa dimanfaatkan untuk bahan makananan tambahan. Terung dikenal dengan nama latin Solanum Melogena L., merupakan tanaman asli daerah tropis yang umum dikenal di Indonesia. Bagi para petani terung, budidaya terung masih memberikan peluang usaha yang cukup baik untuk memenuhi pasar dalam negeri. Beberapa varietas terung lokal seperti terung ungu yang biasa dijual di pasar tradisional konon telah menembus pasar Jepang dengan seleksi standardisasi mutu sesuai permintaan export.

Tanaman Terung berasal dari Benua Asia terutama India dan Birma. Terung atau Terong (Bahasa Jawa -red) termasuk jenis sayuran berbuah yang banyak digemari masyarakat. Dari setiap buah terung yang dipanen memiliki kandungan vitamin cukup tinggi, seperti vitamin A, B1, B2, C, P dan Fosfor. Di pasar tradisional harga terung berkisar mencapai Rp. 4000 per kilogram, buah terung menjadi menu makanan tambahan yang dapat dikombinasikan dengan masakan sayuran lainnya. Dari segi manfaat, buah terung dapat dijadikan bahan obat tradisional, seperti mengobati gatal-gatal pada kulit, obat sakit gigi, wasir, tekanan darah tinggi, dan pelancar air seni, bahkan buah terung dipercaya dapat memperlancar proses persalinan.

Beberapa varietas buah terung yang ada di Indonesia antara lain:

1. Terung Ungu Biasa
Buahnya berukuran besar dan berbentuk bulat agak memanjang seperti buah alpuket atau pier dengan bagian ujung buah bulat tumpul. Buah muda memiliki warna yang bervariasi, ungu muda, kuning susu atau hijau keputih-putihan, sedangkan buah yang sudah tua berwarna ungu keputihan. Buah muda biasanya dimanfaatkan untuk manisan sedangkan buah tua biasanya dijadikan bahan sayur.

2.Terung Ungu
Buah berbentuk bulat panjang dan ujungnya meruncing, buah terung ungu muda berwarna ungu muda sedangkan buah terung ungu tua berwarna ungu.

3.Terung Kelapa
Buah terung yang sudah masak berbentuk bulat besar seukuran bola tenis berwarna putih atau hijau keputih-putihan, rasanya renyah, manis, dan sedikit kesat, biasanya dimakan dengan cara di lalap.

4. Terung Lalap
Buah terung lalap masak berbentuk bulat kecil seukuran bola ping-pong, warna kulit buahnya ungu atau putih keunguan, cita rasanya renyah dan manis tetapi tidak getir seperti terung kelapa.

5. Terung Kontet
Berbentuk bulat panjang berwarna hijau atau bercak putih, diameter lebih kurang 1 -1,5 cm panjang lebih kurang 10-15 cm. Terung kontet sangat jarang dijumpai disemua pasar tradisional, terung ini biasa dijual di pasar swalayan.

Selain kandungan gizi pada terung cukup tinggi, buah terung dapat dikembangkan secara intensif dalam skala agribisnis sekaligus memberikan sumbangan terhadap keanekaragaman bahan pangan. Tanaman terung tumbuh pada tanah yang kaya bahan organik, berdrainase baik dan memiliki pH 6,8 sampai 7,3. Biasanya tanaman terung bisa ditanam ditataran rendah sampai ketinggian lebih kurang 100 m dpl dengan suhu udara 22° – 30° C dalam cuaca panas dan iklim yang kering dan mendapat penyinaran matahari yang cukup.
